Scutching Knife 2023
22.5”x6”, tulip poplar, walnut oil, cinnamon, wax
This scutching knife was made for the weaver and textile artist, Allie Dudley. The design is based on historical Scandinavian scutching knives with an aim to make the knife more contemporary. This is used as one of the final steps of processing flax into linen. Carved with hand tools, adorned with chip carving and kolrosing.
Blue Rigid Heddle with White Shuttle, 2023
4”x5”, basswood, tung oil, milk paint, wax.
Ridgid heddles are small looms that can be used to weave bands or tape. Historically heddles could be carved as gifts used in courtship gifted from a carver to a weaver.
This heddle has been chip carved and burnished with a beach pebble.
Stave Rigid Heddle, 2023
4”x4” basswood, walnut oil, milk paint, wax.
This helddle and shuttle were carved out of basswood after a day of staring at stave churches. While the adornment differs from an actual stave church, it was the mood I was trying to capture.
Chip carved and burnished with a beach pebble.
Nalebinding Needles, 2023
Various sizes and woods, walnut oil, wax
Red Flower Heddle 2023
“5x4”, Basswood, milk paint, walnut oil, wax
This is a heddle I chipped carved free hand. I wanted something floral and sharp.
Red Flower Shuttle 2023
“4 1/4 x 2 1/2” Basswood, milk paint, walnut oil, wax
The matching shuttle for the Red Flower Heddle.
As Above so Below Heddle, 2023
Basswood, milk paint, walnut oil, wax
I wanted to create a heddle with no clear top or bottom, and that also reflected its self. This heddle features the seed of life and its obverse self.
Krusa Heddle 1, 2024
4”x5”, basswood, chalk paint, wax.
I’ve recently been inspired by the idea or concept of Krusa, which is to my understanding and old Swedish word for decoration. This inspiration comes from @lina.odell on instagram, and also when Harley Refsal said that folk art is just the fear of blank space (Refsal, Scandinavian Figure Carvings 2015).
Krusa Heddle 2, 2024
Size tbd, basswood, chalk paint, wax
This is a 30 warp heddle that I started to carve as a demonstration peice during my co-instructed class, “Carve and Weave” with Cassie Dixon at the John C. Cambell Folkschool
