Autumnal Gnome Scene,
Various sizes, basswood, linseed oil, cotton, acrylic paint, wax.
This is an example of my earlier gnome and jack o lantern designs. While they have since evolved, I like the feeling of a breeze that was caught in this gnome.
Stogie Gnome,
4”x1.5” basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paints, wax.
I particularly like this gnome because I was able to incorporate an ear break into the design of the gnome. Peep those stitches on the left ear.
Gnome Couple, 2022
Various sizes, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax.
Yellow Hat, 2023
3.5”x1.5”, basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paint, wax
Christmas Gnomes, 2022
Various sizes, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax
Yellow Hat 2, 2023
Size unknown, basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paint, wax
Walking Stick Gnome, 2022
Size unknown, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax
This gnome was one of my earlier attempts to carve hands still while on a small scale. While I don’t know the height of this particular carving, I do know it was under 4 inches tall. This was featured in the 2023 John C. Campbell Folkschool catalog to advertise my class, Story Telling Through Woodcarving
Lavender Jones, 2022
4”x1.5”, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax.
This is the first trans masc gnome I carved. There is a gap in modern tellings of folklore where queer representation is missing. Nature is inherently queer, and the stories we tell about it should include that
Willow Wisps, 2021
Various sizes, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax
Baba Yaga House, 2022
5.5”x1.5” basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, moss, wax
Spooky Blep, 2022
1.5”x2.25” basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax
This was a failed gnome that kept on failing until almost no wood was left. A happy mistake.
Radish Summoner and Friend, 2021
Various sizes, basswood, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax
This was born of a DND daydream I had about creating a low level monster for fledgling parties to cut their teeth on in a first encounter. A magical radish summoner that wreaks havoc on small farms convincing vegetables to leave their cozy beds and terrorize the farmers.
Mush dude Warriors, 2021
Various sizes sub 2 inches, basswood, jute twine, magnets, linseed oil, acrylic paint, wax.
Another project spurred from a daydream. What if our gnome friends woke up the mycelium to combat things like spruce beetle infestations, etc?
Autumnal Gnome Ornaments 2023
Various sizes, basswood, acrylic paints, walnut oil, wax.
I know fall ornaments aren’t really a thing, but I was feeling inspired by the foliage and fungi Western NC has to offer during spooky season. I like to think about gnomes changing their hats with the season to blend in with their environment .
Peter’s Gnome, 2023
4”x1.5” basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paints, wax, oak hydrangea
Christmas Couple, 2023
Various sizes, basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paint, wax
I made this couple for my partner’s parents on our first Christmas spent together. The gnome on the left has a shirt that is styled after a Swedish work shirt. The gnome on the right has an apron design created by the great great grandmother of Emil Westman. You can see his work on instagram under the user name @emils_tragubbar.
Mushdudes with Junk,
1.5”x1” basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paint, wax
An anatomical study of the mushdude if it had human-ish genitals.
Double Mushroom,
3”x1.5” basswood, walnut oil, acrylic paint, wax.
